Sky expected to see the underside of the grandstand seating again. Maybe even a trickle of orange soda dropping toward her eyeball. Instead, she found Jared peering down at her.
Dressed in a warm coat, boots, and jeans, he took a step back to give her room to get up. They were in Blackfin Woods. The lights and music of the circus drifted faintly from the clearing a few hundred meters away, but otherwise, the woods were silent.
“Do you know where we are?”
Jared’s tone was curious, as though his being suddenly alone with Sky in the middle of the woods with a supposedly derelict circus very much in full swing in the near distance was nothing more than an intriguing turn of events.
Sky wiggled her toes in the grass where dew had gathered. There was not a lick of frost anywhere. In fact, Sky found that even in only her camisole and pajama bottoms, she wasn’t really cold.
“This isn’t the same time as it was before,” she said, more to herself than to answer Jared’s question. “Everything’s different.”
A little ways from where they stood, Sky spotted the church spire rising straight and strong through the trees. There, at its peak, Silas sat watching. Except Sky could somehow tell the weathervane wasn’t haunted in this time, in its original spot on the church.
Weird.
Still, she waved hello—just in case.
“What do you mean? Where are we?”
Sky looked at Jared and pointed to the circus. “We’ve gone back in time. Something about that circus, or the people in the circus, is connected with how someone tried to kill me. I don’t know how it ties together, or even why you’re here this time, but as you are, you might as well help me get some answers.”
“Sure. Come on, let’s check it out.”
They made their way carefully through the woods to the forest of pitched tents.
Although the music was playing and the circus lights flashed garishly above their heads, Sky had the impression that the main events weren’t happening at the moment, and the crowds were yet to come. Instead of heading straight for the Big Top, Jared gestured for them to walk through the line of stalls making up the midway. The smell of popcorn and cotton candy and other sticky-sweet things filled her nostrils, and she stared at the glass-fronted display of the doughnut vendor’s stall.
“Only two bucks per half dozen, sweetheart,” the boy manning the stall said in heavily accented English, though Sky couldn’t identify the accent. “Or free if you give me a kiss.” The boy grinned, revealing a set of teeth that had been filed into sharp points. Sky hurried on after Jared.
“Look!” Sky pointed farther along the row to where a kiosk draped in heavy fabrics bore the sign MADAME CURIO: TAROT, PALMISTRY, AND DIVINATION. $5 PER SESSION.
“I don’t suppose you happen to have five bucks, do you?”
Jared patted himself down, checking the pockets of his coat, but came up empty.
“Nada.”
“Damn. She might be less crazy now.”
A small boy raced past them, his little legs thundering along as he squealed in delight.
